Collingwood downs Hawthorn 116-72 in NAB Challenge match

Levi Greenwood and Travis Varcoe had fine games as Collingwood beat a young Hawthorn squad 116-72 in their opening NAB Challenge match on Feb. 26. The two recruits and acting skipper Steele Sidebottom were effective in leading the Pies’ midfield while some of the team’s top players sat out. The match took place at the Aurora Stadium in front of 15,522 fans with the score line reading 0.17.14 (116) to 2.8.6 (72). Other players who stood out for Collingwood included fifth-overall draft choice Jordan De Goey and Jesse White. De Goey played well in all four quarters and booted a long set shot goal. White chipped in by kicking a pair of goals and they were good value for the win. White had a so-so campaign last year after joining Collingwood from the Sydney Swans and played the game as Travis Cloke was out of the squad. Hawthorn fielded a largely inexperienced side as several veterans sat this one out, including Jarryd Roughead, Josh Gibson, skipper Luke Hodge, Fordan Lewis, Shaun Burgoyne and Cyril Rioli. Any of these players can be backed this campaign with a wager at the BetEasy AFL site.

Even though they were beaten, Hawks’ supporters were glad to see Jed Anderson back in the side as he put in fine performance and scored an exquisite goal. Other players who had good games were Sam Mitchell, Liam Shiels and James Sicily. Hawthorn’s game got off to a rough start when 20-year-old defender Kaiden Brand had to be helped off the field with a left shoulder injury and wasn’t able to return. Twenty-one-year-old midfielder Anderson was back in action after missing the entire 2014 season due to shoulder surgery and he looks determined to make the team’s best 22. Other Hawks’ player pushing for positions include Brendan Whitecross, Jonathan O’Rourke and Alex Woodward. These players can also be backed with a BetEasy AFL wager in the best and fairest matket.

For Collingwood, Jesse White was definitely the Magpies’ attacking focal point and he impressed head coach Nathan Buckley with his performance. In addition, Jordan De Goey showed he can handle the tough pace of AFL football and was effective as a link-up player across half-forward.
