Gold Coast Skipper Gary Ablett Close to Returning

266240-tlsnewsportraitSkipper Gary Ablett of Gold Coast will be missing the annual captain’s day this year as he’s chosen not to attend the Melbourne event. Instead, he’d rather focus on getting fit for the first round of AFL action next weekend. The Suns’ star didn’t appear in any of his team’s preseason contests as he’s still rehabilitating from shoulder reconstruction surgery last year. Ablett suffered the campaign-ending injury in round 16 against Collingwood. Gold Coast fans may want to back their club this year with a CrownBet AFL Grand Final Bonus Bet.

Gold Coast released a short official statement on March 24 which confirmed Ablett will miss the preseason media function in Melbourne as he continues to prepare for the team’s opener at the MCG against Melbourne on Saturday, April 4th. A Gold Coast spokesperson told the media,

Following on-going discussions with Gary and our medical and rehabilitation staff, the club has advised the AFL that Gary will be unavailable to attend the Captains Day event.  As everyone is aware Gary is racing the clock to be declared fit for our round one game against Melbourne.

Gold Coast believe Ablett’s conditioning may have been set back if he’d attended the event in Melbourne and he might not be ready for the game at the MCG. An AFL spokesperson said the league accepted and understood Ablett’s choice not to attend Captain’s Day and appreciated Gold Coast’s communications with them. The league stated, “We understand his absence and will work around that on the day, knowing that Gary has always provided a great representation of his club at previous captains’ days.” Michael Rischitelli will attend the event for the Suns’ as Ablett’s replacement at the event. Don’t forget to make a CrownBet AFL Grand Final Bonus Bet this season as there are several options to wager on.
