According to head coach Alastair Clarkson, Hawthorn went after James Frawley in the free agency period so the team could play veteran defenders John Gibson and Brian Lake in the attack in 2015. Clarkson said that Frawley’s a good player at both ends of the field and that’s why he was deemed such a valuable player by the club after he decided to leave Melbourne after making 139 appearances with them. The addition of the 26-year-old means Gibson, Lake and Ben Stratton, fellow tall backman can be used up front if needed. Hawthorn could be an excellent choice again this year for a BetEasy AFL Grand Final wager.
Clarkson recently spoke with AFL.com.au and remarked,
We’ve been unable to play Brian Lake, in his two years at our club, forward at any stage – unless it’s been a real pinch-hit. The same with Gibson … and Stratton hasn’t played another position other than in the back end. That’s why we chased after James – to give us that flexibility.
Lake has some experience playing in the forward line and he’s back for another season after many fans believed he was going to retire after the 2014 campaign. Lake appeared in 197 matches for the Western Bulldogs in the past and kicked 32 goals in them. The Bulldogs mat be another club fans and punters may want to back with a BetEasy AFL Grand Final wager. The 33-year-old Lake has kicked just a pair of goals in his 32 games since joining Hawthorn while Gibson has two in his career and Stratton has booted just one.
Clarkson admitted that playing Lake, Gibson and Stratton up front might not work, but feels there’s no harm in trying it out. He added that he’s glad Lake didn’t retire because he makes the side more flexible since he can play more than one position. The Hawks had two of the league’s best forwards last year in Jack Gunston and Jarryd Roughead as the pair combined for 133 goals. However, their depth at tall forward has come into question even though David Hale, Matt Spangher and Ryan Schoenmakers are all capable players. Clarkson said youngsters James Sicily Dallas Willsmore and Tim O’Brien will eventually take over at tall forward in the future.
