Read our AFL Round 17 Tips below for our best bets and predictions for the AFL action this week.
Feature Game #1 – GWS Giants vs Sydney Swans
When: Saturday 15th July 2017, 7:25pm
Where: Spotless Stadium, Sydney
Odds: Giants $1.80, Swans $2.05
The Battle of Bridge is the match of the round as the red-hot Swans face the Giants on Saturday night.
Sydney have now won five straight matches and they’re just inside the top eight. Interestingly, their heaviest defeat of the season came against the Giants in Round 5 at the SCG (42 points). GWS backed up their draw with the Cats in another drawn match against the Hawks last week. But they’re still sitting equal top on the ladder with the Crows.
The Giants are 4-0-1 at Spotless Stadium in 2017 and drew with the Cats in their last home match. In three of four matches this season at the venue, the margin has finished under 6 points. The Swans have played here three times and they have a 1-2 record.
The Giants have three huge inclusions for this clash. Toby Greene and Steve Johnson are back in the forward line and Zac Williams down back. For the Swans, skipper Josh Kennedy is back and Oliver Florent drops out.
The sides have played 12 overall matches and the Swans lead 8-4. However, the GWS Giants have won the last three matches. They’ve also won those three matches by 36 or more points.
Swans Win ($2.05)
The Swans and Giants haven’t played in a close match together in their history of meetings. But after two draws in a row, the Giants are getting used to tight finishes. Despite the two draws, the Giants should have really lost both matches. This should be a tight match again and will come down to the last five minutes. The Swans are in red-hot form at the moment and they’re paying value odds of over $2. We would back the Swans but not by much.
Feature Game #2 – Melbourne Demons vs Adelaide Crows
When: Saturday 15th July 2017, 7:40pm
Where: TIO Stadium, Darwin
Odds: Crows $1.37, Demons $3.20
The Crows looked back to their best against the Bulldogs last week in a 59 point win at home. They have a 5-2 record in the last 7 matches and sit equal first on the ladder. Melbourne survived against the Blues last round and they’re now pushing for a top four finish.
Melbourne have played at TIO Stadium on seven occasions since 2010 and they have a 3-4 record. The Crows have never played at the venue.
The Crows have brought back Hugh Greenwood and Tom Lynch for this match. Scott Thompson was dropped and Wayne Milera is out with injury. Jay Kennedy-Harris is back for the Demons after playing VFL for most of the year.
The Demons smashed the Crows at Adelaide Oval by 41 points in Round 8. The Crows led by 10 points at half-time but the Demons kicked 12 goals in the second half to three. Overall, the Crows lead 23-13 in 36 matches since 1991.
Crows Win ($1.37)
The neutral venue makes this match a more even contest than the odds suggest. But the Demons do have injury concerns, especially without Jack Viney, Tomas Bugg and Nathan Jones. The trio combined for 5 of the Demons 12 goals against the Crows last time. The Crows are in better form compared to the Round 8 meeting against the Demons and we’re backing them to win this one.
