Feature Game #1 – Adelaide Crows vs Geelong Cats
It’s a top of the table clash to kick off the round as the Crows host the Cats on Friday night football.
The Crows are 4-1 in their past five matches and they sit at the top of the ladder with a 12-4 record. They’re coming off a 46 point win against the Demons in Darwin. While Geelong had an interesting three point win over the Hawks. Patrick Dangerfield moved forward with an injury and kicked 5 goals. But they fell away in the last quarter and were lucky to win.
The Cats won the only meeting at the venue in 2016, also on Friday night by 26 points. Overall, the Crows have a 7-2 record at home this year and beat the Bulldogs by 59 points in their last home match.
Jake Lever is out with a hamstring and Rory Sloane has been declared fit after concussion last week. For the Cats, Dangerfield has been named but he could still miss on Friday. They will welcome back Scott Selwood and Tom Stewart for a boost in the midfield and defence.
The Cats have the wood over the Crows lately with 5 wins in a row since 2014. They met in Round 11 this season and the Cats won by 22 points.
The Cats have a great record against the Crows but the injury to Dangerfield is the reason why Adelaide are favourites. He kicked 3 goals against them in Round 11 and he’ll be a big loss, even if he plays it won’t be at full fitness. The Crows should be able to dominate the clearances and give their forward line more use as a result. They had 51 inside 50s in the last meeting but could only convert into 10 goals. At home, they’re a much better scoring team and they rank 1st in the AFL for goals per game (16.8) compared to the Cats (15.1). We’re going with the Crows but this still should be a close match.
Feature Game #2 – Melbourne Demons vs Port Adelaide Power
The fourth placed Power take on the Demons at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.
Melbourne are 9-7 and sit one win behind the Power on the ladder. They were out-played by the Crows last week but they have massive team news this week. While for the Power, they’re 4-1 in the last five and easily defeated the Kangaroos last week.
The Power have a 5-4 at the MCG since 2013. They’ve only played here once this season and beat the Magpies by 31 points. Melbourne are 3-5 at the MCG this year but four of those losses came within 3 goals.
The Demons have a host of important changes. They’ve brought back Tyson, Watts, Viney, Salem and Trengove. Bernie Vince is out with suspension and Dean Kent is injured. For the Power, they’ve made just one change with the inclusion of Broadbent for Pittard.
The Demons won by 40 points in the last meeting but overall the Power lead 19-12. Port won the last matchup at the MCG in 2013 by 79 points, but the Demons are playing much better this season.
Demons Win ($2.35)
This should be one of the closest matches of the round as they matchup well together. The Power are in great form at the moment and they hold no fears at the MCG. But with five big inclusions, the Demons are a huge change of an upset. They also beat the Power by 40 points last year and will be looking to knock them out of the top four. We’re going with the underdog in this one.
