Feature Game #1 – Hawthorn vs Sydney
Sydney and Hawthorn renew their rivalry on Friday night in a crucial matchup.
Hawthorn are finishing off the season well as they have a 3-1-1 record in their last five matches. They drew against the Giants and lost by 3 points against the Cats, so they can match Sydney in this one. Sydney on the other hand are flying with a 7-0 record since the Hawks beat them in Round 10. They won their last Friday night MCG match against Melbourne by 6 goals and will be looking for a top four spot with a victory.
The Hawks are 1-3 at the MCG in the last four matches this season and the Swans are 2-2. Sydney have won two straight at the MCG and they’ve won the last two against the Hawks at the venue.
Will Hayward returns for the Swans in place of Daniel Robinson. While the Hawks are unchanged.
Hawthorn won by 6 points in Round 10 and they’ve won the last two meetings at the SCG. However, Sydney are 2-0 at the MCG against them since 2015.
Swans WIN ($1.50)
Even though the Hawks won in Round 10, Sydney were down two players early on in the match and only lost by 6 points. They’re in hot form at the moment and their midfield is dominating the clearances in each victory. With Lance Franklin up against his old side on Friday night, the Hawks defence will struggle to contain him. They’re missing Frawley and Gibson down back. The other storylines in this game is former Swan Tom Mitchell against his old side and former Hawk Josh Kennedy is playing his 200th AFL match. We would back the Swans as they’ll get extra motivation for beating the Hawks in Kennedy’s milestone game.
Feature Game #2 – Western Bulldogs vs Essendon
When: Sunday, 1:10pm
Where: Etihad Stadium
Odds: Bombers $1.80, Bulldogs $2.05
It’s 8th versus 10th on the ladder as the Bombers look to secure their position in the top eight.
The Bulldogs have won two in a row against the Blues and Suns. However, they haven’t beaten a side in the top eight since Round 7 against the Tigers. With a top eight spot on the line, the Bulldogs need to win this clash.
Essendon outlasted the Kangaroos last week and they have a 3-0 record since Round 16. They’ve also scored 117+ in those three wins. They sit 8th on the ladder and they’ll be looking to push away from the pack behind them on the ladder.
The Bulldogs haven’t been great at Etihad in recent weeks. They’ve lost to the Eagles by 7, only defeated North by a point and the Demons thrashed them by 57 points. While Essendon have won four of the past five at the venue and should have beaten the Lions. They’ve also kicked 100+ points in all of those victories.
Both sides will be omitting three players from the interchange bench before Sunday’s match. But the Bulldogs will be without Jack Redpath (suspension) and Dale Morris (injury). The Bombers have no injury concerns.
The Bulldogs have won the last two against the Bombers, but last year Essendon were missing their best players.
Bombers WIN ($1.80)
The two teams are separated by percentage on the ladder so this should be a close contest at Etihad. Overall, the Bombers are stronger in the forward line and the injury to Dale Morris hurts the Bulldogs defence. Essendon have a better record at Etihad this year and they’ve beaten a few sides above them on the ladder in the last 6 weeks. We would back the Bombers in this one.
