Feature Game #1 – Western Bulldogs vs GWS Giants
When: Friday, 7:50pm
Where: Etihad Stadium, Melbourne
Odds: Giants $1.70, Bulldogs $2.20
The rivalry between the Bulldogs and Giants continues on Friday night footy in Round 21.
The Western Bulldogs are 7th on the ladder and they’ve won four consecutive matches. They will be looking for revenge after the Giants won by 2 points in the last meeting.
GWS comfortably defeated the Demons last week and they were boosted by the return of Brett Deledio. They’re second on the ladder and can cement a top four spot with a victory.
The Bulldogs are 2-2 in the last four matches at Etihad since Round 13. But they beat the Bombers by 30 points in Round 19 at the venue.
The Giants are 1-1 against the Bulldogs at Etihad in their short history. However in 2017, they’ve lost both matches at Etihad. They also lost the last Friday night match at Etihad by 23 points against the Saints.
The Bulldogs defence hurts with the loss of Easton Wood. Lukas Webb and Clay Smith were both dropped. Jake Stringer is back, along with Tory Dickson and Josh Dunkley.
The Giants will miss Shane Mumford in the ruck and Devon Smith is out with a knee injury. Jonathon Patton and Toby Greene return in the forward line. However, Jeremy Cameron is still sidelined.
Since 2014, the Giants have a 3-2 record against the Bulldogs. They won by 2 points in Round 6 this season. Although, the Bulldogs won the most important meeting in the Preliminary final last season.
Bulldogs Win ($2.20)
The last two meetings have been close matches and this figures to be another tight match on Friday. The Bulldogs will be boosted by the return of Stringer but their defence is weaker without Wood. While the Giants have two inclusions into the forward line, Mumford and Cameron are big outs. The Bulldogs are the underdogs in the betting but this match is in Melbourne and Bulldogs are in great form at the moment. I’m going with the Bulldogs.
Feature Game #2 – Geelong Cats vs Richmond Tigers
When: Saturday, 2:10pm
Where: Simonds Stadium, Geelong
Odds: Tigers $1.65, Cats $2.30
The Richmond Tigers head to Geelong in search of a rare win at the Cattery on Saturday afternoon footy.
The Cats are 1-2 in their past three matches and they’ve slipped to fourth on the ladder. They struggled against Sydney last week but they regain Patrick Dangerfield for this match.
Richmond are third on the ladder and they’ve won four on the trot. Last week, they comfortably beat the Hawks at the MCG and they’re starting to hit form before the finals.
The Cats lost at Kardina Park last week but they still have a 15-2 record since 2015. Richmond have won only one match at Kardina Park since 1992 (Round 9, 2006).
Patrick Dangerfield is back for the Cats from suspension. They’ve also brought back Motlop, Stanley and Menzel. While Hawkins, Selwood, Buzza and Duncan are the outs.
For the Tigers, Jack Riewoldt is back in the forward line for Anthony Miles.
Geelong are 12-0 against the Tigers since 2006. The last four meetings have been at the MCG and Geelong have won the last three by under 10 points. The last meeting at this venue was back in Round 4, 2012 and the Cats won by 10 points.
The Cats are missing their skipper and other important players, but they’ve regained Dangerfield. He’ll be the key for the Cats against Dustin Martin and the Tigers. Riewoldt’s return from injury will help the Tigers and I think they can get over the line.
