Lewy Taylor looking to improve in second year

The Brisbane Lions’ Lewy Taylor enjoyed an excellent debut season in 2014 and capped it off by being named the NAB AFL Rising Star. However, he and the team are expecting even bigger things out of him in 2015. Taylor didn’t experience a full preseason last year, but has one under his belt this time around and he feels that will make a big difference. Taylor was chosen in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft with the 28th pick, but was recovering from a foot operation at the time. This meant he had to send the majority of his first preseason in the gym and swimming pool. A healthy Taylor could be a good choice for the BetEasy AFL Best and Fairest wager this term.

The diminutive Taylor played in 22 matches last year after making the senior squad as a rookie. His average of 17 disposals was one of the reasons he earned the winning the prestigious Rising Star award. But even though he lit up the league last year, Taylor believes he has a lot more to offer and feels this season will be even better. He recently spoke with AFL.com.au and said, “Last year I felt like I wasn’t running out games too well. I’d get through, but this year I feel a lot better and running training out a lot better. Hopefully I can take that into games. It’s just more efforts. Every opponent you get is going to be as fit as you, but it definitely helps you to run your opponent around more and work them into the ground.”

Knowing his teammates better will also benefit Taylor this campaign. Last year he was a part of the Lions’ ‘Mozzie Squad’ along with Josh Green and Dayne Zorko and he said he’s confident playing with players their caliber. Taylor will get some competition this year from newcomers Allen Christensen, Mitch Robinson and Dayne Beams as they’re looking for work as half-forward. These players should also garner some attention this year when it comes to the BetEasy AFL Best and Fairest award wagers.

It’s hard to believe that Taylor is just 19 years old and it’s obvious he has a fine future ahead of him in the AFL as long as he can remain healthy. He remarked that it was an honour to win the Rising Star award last year, but his main goal is to play as many games as possible with the senior side, earn as many wins as possible, and push for a place in the finals. He added that he doesn’t really pay attention to the compliments that come his way since he feels he can still improve as a player and person.
