Melbourne’s Jake Spencer aiming for starting job

Ruckman Jake Spencer of the Melbourne Demons is hoping to be back in the lineup in time for the AFL team’s first NAB Challenge contest after suffering a back problem during the pre-season. Spencer’s training sessions were restricted prior to Christmas, but is attending the club’s training camp at Maroochydore to get back into peak condition. Punters can back Spencer or any of his Demons’ teammates this year via the BetEasy AFL Brownlow Medal Bonus Bet.

Spencer recently commented on Melbourne’s official website, “I had a few back issues leading up to Christmas which kept me pretty limited in what I could do. Hopefully I’ll be in full training by the end of the camp.”

The ruckman played the first five matches of the 2014 campaign before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. Spencer said his ankle is fine, but his back has been giving him problems and he knows he has to overcome it if he’s going to earn a permanent starting job. Spencer has 29 games under his belt so far in his AFL career, but will be facing some stiff competition for a spot from fellow ruckmen Max Gawn and Mark Jamar, who can also be backed with the BetEasy AFL Brownlow Medal Bonus Bet.

He knows he’s in for a tough camp and Spencer admitted, “I’m probably not as confident about this year, as much as I was last season, with Jamar and Gawny performing well in the pre-season. I probably see myself at the bottom of the pecking order at the moment, so that’s why I’m keen to get back out there in full training. Who knows? Anything can happen. This time last year I was flying and then my ankle gave away early in the season. You never know what situations can come up, so all I can do is train hard and hopefully I’ll get an opportunity in the NAB Challenge and show coach Roos what I can do.”

Melbourne’s first NAB Challenge series match takes place on March 5th when the Demons travel to the Fremantle Oval to take on Fremantle. Fans of Fremantle can also wager on their players this season with the BetEasy AFL Brownlow Medal Bonus Bet.
