Cripps second in AFLCA leaderboard

Goal of the Week | Round 17
Dale Thomas earns the Round 17 Goal of the Week of the back of this clean passage of play.

CARLTON’s Patrick Cripps was adjudged best afield by the opposing coaches in Friday’s night clash against St Kilda.

Cripps polled eight votes for his performance on Friday night, which included 35 disposals, 23 contested possessions and 10 clearances – the most of anyone on the ground in those three categories.

The midfield bull sits in second place with 68 votes in the Shadforth Financial Group AFLCA Champion Player of the Year, only three behind Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn.

His showing on Friday night marked the sixth time he had achieved best-on-ground honours in the award. It was also the seventh time he has polled eight or more votes in 2018 – the most of anyone in the competition.

It drew similarities to his breakout game over three years ago against the same opposition, where he won a NAB Rising Star nomination in Round 4, 2015. On that day, Cripps had 33 disposals, 23 contested possessions and a goal.

The only Carlton player to win the Champion Player of the Year award since its inception 15 years ago was Marc Murphy in 2011.
