Essendon defender Michael Hurley says there is room for improvement as his side aims to reach the finals for the first time since 2014.
A win against Fremantle on Sunday will all but secure a spot in the top eight.
“I think for us, all year we have been hunting consistency and that’s what we will try and do Sunday against Fremantle,” Hurley said.
“Our four quarter efforts have been up and down this year and that’s what we’re really after so hopefully this weekend we can play four quarters.
“We probably haven’t played as well as we would’ve liked in the past weeks but this year has been really strong and hopefully we can find that for the remaining games.
“If we are lucky enough to make finals, we want to take some good form in.
“Last week we needed a lot to go right and fortunately it did. We were good enough to get over Gold Coast, which was really pleasing, and then the other teams around us helped us out as well.
“It’s nice that it’s in our own hands now and I think if we can get the win over Fremantle, we are pretty much locked in.
“It’ exciting, we’ve wanted to play finals all year and now that is getting closer.”
The Bombers enter the match having won two of its last three matches, while the Dockers have lost their last two games by a combined 208 points.
“I haven’t really seen many of Fremantle’s games, obviously the score card hasn’t been overly flattering for them,” Hurley said.
“We will look at them during the week, see how they structure up and what they look like.
“The focus for us is playing the way that we want to play.”
Hurley missed the last Saturday’s game against Gold Coast because of a calf injury but is hopeful he will make a return soon.
“If we are lucky enough to make finals, the bye will be really handy and then see how it goes from there,” Hurley said.
“At the moment I’m not really sure (when I will return) but hopefully it’s a nice strong week and then I can play Sunday.”
Essendon fans are encouraged to turn up and cheer the champs, Jobe Watson and James Kelly, for their final home game of the season.
