Geelong Cats

Geelong Cats Logo & Guernsey AFL

The second oldest club in the league and one dominating regional Victoria, the Geelong Cats were established in 1859. They were a foundation club for the Victorian Football League and established themselves as immediate winners, taking out 7 premierships. However, from 1963, the Cats didn’t have premiership glory for another 44 years. It was in 2007 when they recorded an 119 point winning victory and then went on to win the flag again in 2009 and 2011.

Geelong has a steady rivalry with Hawthorn after an upset in the 1968 grand final and then again in 2008. In 2008, Geelong was heavily tipped to win but Hawthorn had a come from behind victory by 26 points. After this, however, Geelong won its next 11 games against the Hawks in the following 5 years, in what many referred to as ‘The Kennet Curse’. Geelong have a steady membership with an incredible 51,919 members recorded in the 2016 season.
