Gold Coast Suns

Gold Coast Suns Logo & Guernsey AFL

One of the latest teams to join the AFL, the Gold Coast Suns were established in 2011. The club’s junior squad competed in the 2009 TAC competition and won many games, setting up them for good stead in the national league. The first game that the Suns played was against the Geelong Cats in round 10, 2011 in their home ground at the Carrara Stadium on the Gold Coast.

The inaugural team featured old Geelong player Gary Ablett Junior which set them up for an instant rivalry, but also meant that many Geelong fans loyal to Ablett changed their support to the Suns, giving them an immediate fan base.

By the 2013 AFL season, the Suns had improved greatly. They had even had victories against the super experienced sides of Collingwood, St Kilda, Western Bulldogs, and North Melbourne. They finished that season with 8 wins and in 14th place on the ladder.
