Greater Western Sydney Giants

GWS Giants Logo & Guernsey AFL

One of the newest teams to join the league, the Greater Western Sydney Giants, or the “GWS Giants” represent the Greater Western Sydney and Canberra regions.

The club is based at the Tom Wills Oval in Sydney Olympic Park but plays four games a year at Manuka Oval in Canberra.

The AFL had shown interest in creating a team based in Western Sydney around 1999 but the idea fizzled out. However, after the success of the Sydney Swans in the 2005 grand final, the idea was revisited due to the increased popularity of the sport. After much planning between 2008 and 2012, the Greater Western Sydney Giants were established and Leon Cameron was named as the new senior assistant coach was confirmed.

The Giants did not experience many victories in their first two seasons, however by their third season in 2014 they won two of their first three games. In 2016 they qualified for their first final series and finished fourth on the ladder.
