St Kilda Saints

St. Kilda Saints Logo & Guernsey AFL

Established in the bayside area of Melbourne, the St Kilda Saints were founded in 1873. Although they have only won one single premiership, they are quite a popular team in the league. The have made it to the AFL finals in 2009 and 2010. Their lack of premierships often means they are described as perennial underachievers. They have finished last in the league more than any other club with a record 27 times.

Between 1973 and 1991 St Kilda did not make it to the finals, but after the league was officially renamed to the Australian Football League in 1991, the Saints were serious contenders. It was this year that Tony Lockett kicked more than 100 goals in the season. In 1999, St Kilda moved its new playing home ground from Waverley Park to the Docklands Stadium.

From 2000 to 2008, the Saints went from wooden spoon winners to qualifying for the finals. They defeated Geelong in the finals in 2004 but where then eliminated by Port Adelaide, who went on to take the out the flag that year.
