Sydney Swans

Sydney Swans Logo & Guernsey AFL

Starting off as the South Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League, which is why they play with SMFC on the back of their guernsey, this team relocated to Sydney in 1982 and became the Sydney Swans. They were the first club in the competition to be based outside of Victoria. The Swans have played all their home games at the Sydney Cricket Ground since 1982.

Since 1995, the Swans have made it to the finals all but 3 times. They have played almost the most number of finals matches in the league since 2000, coming close to Geelong’s record. The success of 1995 onwards was much accredited to goal kicking Tony Lockett and coach Ron Barassi. The Swans returned to the finals in 2002 and 2005, before taking out the flag in 2005. They lost the next premiership in 2006, but stayed in the final top 8 on the ladder for the next few years. One of the Swans’ best victories in the grand final was against the Hawthorn Hawks when they had a come from behind defeat, winning by a nail biting 10 points.
